About Us
We're a non-profit!
Our Mission:
We are a community-based non-profit social enterprise that works to transmit the intangible cultural heritage of Newfoundland & Labrador’s family fishery. We advocate for an inclusive, gender-equitable & sustainable small-scale fishery that can help combat climate change and contribute to food sovereignty through better local seafood access. To further our mission, we have developed educational programs that are centered around connecting fishing to ocean literacy and we provide specialized programming for women, children, newcomers, and Indigenous community members by partnering with other like-minded non-profits.
Meet Kimberly Orren and Leo Hearn
They live, share and celebrate the knowledge and skills of the traditional family fishery everyday.
Island Rooms is a sanctuary for people willing to learn and get their mitts dirty with the experience that has sustained generations of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. Fishing for Success is stationed in beautiful Petty Harbour, traditionally a thriving fishing village, now a protected fishing area.
The team at Fishing for Success:
With the help of volunteers, summer students, interns, and many other supporters we are able to offer community programs, tours, and so much more!
If you want to learn more about how to get involved:
What we offer:
Visitor Experiences (Tours):
Tours allow “come-from-aways” and locals to see an iceberg, a whale, puffin, seal, and catch their first fish, or 100th! We know that all experiences are made better with food, and everything tastes better when you catch it yourself!
Community Programs:
Our year-round programming for youth, women, and immigrants encourages our visitors to form their own bonds with nature, through purposeful and practical experiences of fishing, gathering, gardening, etc… Empowering the community and youth to make decisions about their future, the way they want to live, and perhaps make a living.
